Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
YVETTE BARAJAS
WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY

When I came to U.S, I didn't know how to speak English, which was frustrating for me because I had low grades and didn't understand anything in all my classes. Ms. Barajas helped me after school to better understand each lesson, and even though it wasn't part of her job, she did it because she wanted to. She emailed the teachers asking them to translate my assignments into Spanish so I could improve my grades, and it worked. My grades improved thanks to her help and the help of the other teachers. What excited me about going to her class was that we were all Latinos, and she had us talk amongst ourselves in English to improve our skills. I was excited because I was learning a new language in a healthy way, and I was also socializing with people. Thanks to her class, I made a lot of friends, and my English improved. She's been supporting me for three years now, and I'm graduating this year. She answers any questions I have without getting offended, and even though she has a lot of work, she makes time to help everyone.
