Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
THOMAS WHEELER
WESTFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Since I’ve moved to Houston, Mr. Wheeler has made me feel extremely welcomed. He’s considerate in ways most teachers may not be and he’s always kept the drive for music I’ve had for me alive. He doesn’t just teach, but he makes it fun. I can’t think of a time so far where I haven’t had a laugh in his class even on my worse days. He makes sure to make it known that he cares about all of his students in their own way. He’s like a counselor, a teacher, and a best friend all in one. He continuously supports me as a music major, giving me feedback when I need it and never making me feel unimportant no matter what my role is. Inside the classroom, like stated before, he makes me feel just as important as everyone else, and has given me information that I’ve needed to. Outside of class, when rehearsals come, he’s always been willing to offer food when we have to stay late until 9 and even just to feed hungry people. When I first arrived here, I used to walk home after rehearsals, even if it were late at night. When Mr. Wheeler got word, he expressed his concern, pointing out that walking was already dangerous alone, but walking where I would walk made it worse. He was worried and in his words, didn’t want me to die. After he learned that, he always offered me a ride home, even when he was more tired than ever, just to make sure I stayed safe.
