Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
SYLVIA CRIER
MCDONOGH #35 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Ms. Crier is an amazing teacher because she goes far beyond what her role requires and truly makes a difference in both her students’ lives and the community. As our librarian and one of the longest-standing staff members at the school, she has built a space that feels welcoming, supportive, and full of opportunities.
What makes her awesome is everything she does outside of just running the library. I’ve been a part of her library club since freshman year, and through it, we’ve done so many meaningful activities. We visit the elderly home across the street to play bingo, spend time with residents, and give them gifts during different seasons and holidays. Those moments are really special because they show us how important it is to give back and connect with others.
Ms. Crier shows she cares by constantly creating opportunities for students to grow and help others. She organizes Thanksgiving basket donations, clothing drives, toy drives, and can drives for people in need. She even helps students find job opportunities when they’re old enough, which shows she’s thinking about our futures, not just our time in school.
One moment that stands out to me is going to the elderly home and seeing how happy the residents are when we visit. It’s not just about playing bingo; it’s about making someone’s day better. That experience stuck with me because it taught me kindness, empathy, and the importance of giving back, and Ms. Crier is the one who made that possible.
She also makes reading fun and rewarding by encouraging us to check out books and even giving incentives like McDonald’s gift cards. Because of her, students are more excited to read and be involved.
Ms. Crier has helped me become a more confident and caring person by showing me how to be involved in my community and take initiative. She creates an environment where students feel valued and inspired to do more.
Inside and outside of the classroom, Ms. Crier’s impact is huge. She doesn’t just teach, she leads, supports, and inspires. I’m really grateful to have been part of her library club and to have learned so much from her.
