STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY

From the 50+ teachers I’ve been a student for, Mr. Patterson has truly been a one-of-a-kind teacher. Over the last four years and across thousands of hours of time spent together, I’ve had the privilege to serve under his teaching and mentorship and it’s safe to say that no other teacher has provided as much value as he has for my life and my future. In his AP Calculus AB class, I wanted to learn something different. Rather than blitzing through the material and keeping quiet, I wanted to share my knowledge and perspectives with my peers. In the prior year, in his Algebra II Honors class, I was a student who didn’t feel the need to pay attention to his lectures. Having already known the material ahead of time, I always kept to myself, completed the work required for the class, and rarely talked with my peers. Despite how reserved I was, Mr. Patterson had a sharp eye for spotting out talent and students with potential. To him, he saw that in me after the countless times I corrected his test review answer keys. Now, being recruited as one of Mr. Patterson's student tutors, I wanted to learn how I could truly be an aide to his teaching. At first, it felt awkward walking up to students, asking if they had any questions about the math they were learning. I wanted to continue learning, so Mr. Patterson insisted on coming after school one day. Through his afterschool tutoring program, I’ve learned the fine techniques and approaches needed to assist any student at any time: always remaining patient, going at their own pace, and adjusting my teaching to their needs and learning ability. What makes Mr. Patterson a life-changing teacher isn’t just his ability to mold students into leaders, but his ability to make his students feel heard and appreciated. Whether that be in small gestures or comments, expressing his gratitude for students’ contributions to the classroom, Mr. Patterson’s importance in teaching lies not in what he teaches, but who he teaches. During my first semester of sophomore year, I hit a mental roadblock. Self-doubt constantly lingered in my mind, always wondering if I was doing enough for others. Academic expectations from my peers and family, to maintain good grades and high test scores, were difficult to uphold and maintain. Constant stress pushed me away from doing the things I loved most, including my newfound passion for tutoring. Dealing with these personal issues all alone felt impossible, and I felt like I was always suffocating. But, on November 21st, 2023, a day I’ve since commemorated every year, I had reached my breaking point. I broke down into tears for the first time since the loss of my grandma, my best friend. Everything in my life up until that moment felt unbearable and a way out seemed so far away. By the time the clock hit 4pm, the afterschool tutoring program had already been shut down. But on that particular day, Mr. Patterson didn’t set me aside. He sat down face-to-face with me, and just listened for 30 more minutes. This one simple, yet life-changing act, from Mr. Patterson gave me a glimpse of what it truly means to be a teacher. It isn’t about the paycheck, nor is it about teaching math to the same 180+ students every week. It’s about the people, and the connections we as individuals are able to make with one another. Trust was never something I was easily able to give to my peers, yet alone other adults. But with Mr. Patterson, that trust wasn’t hard to give. Small things such as his daily smiles whilst greeting students and on-occasion, his infectious laugh, are things that make students like me feel belonged in a community filled with friendship. Whether through routine mental check-ups to ask how I’ve been doing lately, asking how I spent my weekends, with him sharing his own stories in response, or even reserving his own time to have a heart-to-heart conversation with me, his commitment to my personal well-being has filled a big void in my life that's allowed me to feel at-ease with myself, even during some of the hardest times. Over the next two and a half years, his involvement in my academic and personal life would help transform my future career inspirations. Rather than being unable to place on the podium in Speech & Debate tournaments, I was now winning local Model UN tournaments several times. Rather than being scared to use my voice to express my opinion and ideas, I was now presenting my random 3AM business ideas to industry professionals in FBLA competitions. The judges saw the vision in my proposals and as a result, I’ve been recognized as a nine-time state finalist and two-time national qualifier, negotiating and collecting over 70+ pins at national conferences through public speaking skills I developed in Mr. Patterson’s Student Tutor class. Even when I lost out on state champion titles, Mr. Patterson was always there to reassure me that one loss, one placement, doesn’t define who I am as a person, competitor, or leader. His ability to be energetic with a crowd full of students and soft-spoken with students individually speaks volumes about Mr. Patterson’s natural ability to adapt and adjust to students’ comfort and relatability. One of the biggest wins I’ve had in my life was being the first Nevada high schooler selected to attend Civics Unplugged’s Civic Innovation Academy in Washington D.C. This admission to this prestigious and highly-selective summer program isn’t just an attestment to me as a student and individual, but also serves as a highlight for the impact Mr. Patterson has had on my life. Out of thousands of applicants, we spent hours communicating ideas to each other, revising essay drafts, and ensuring that key topics and components weren’t being left out in the final submission. Because of his direct impact, I’ve since had the opportunity to work with the U.S. Department of Education on AI policy solutions in school classrooms just like in Mr. Patterson’s, as well as working with the department’s Office of Communications and Outreach to expand student engagement in education. From these experiences, I’ve since been blessed with several life-changing opportunities. From working with the Nevada Department of Education on initiatives to increase student voices in education policy for nearly 500,000 students, presenting to the Institute for Youth in Policy on policy brief proposals regarding the importance of civic education in 21st-century America, to even traveling to the Nevada State Legislature to lobby and testify for several bills, including AB316 (student members on every district board of trustees), SB245 (expanding civic education via curriculum and diploma requirements), SB156 (creation of a gun violence prevention office), and AB212 (granting college students access to their transcript by removing financial barriers), each and every new experience has fulfilled me with the means to make a difference on my peers through youth advocacy and public service. With each new experience came new wins, and Mr. Patterson was always a part of this journey not just as a teacher, but also a mentor and life role model. Sharing my journey with Mr. Patterson has only strengthened our connection and relationship together, whether in the means of providing practical life and career guidance or suggesting ideas that can be implemented statewide and even nationwide. My leadership transformation both in and out of the classroom wouldn’t have been possible without Mr. Patterson. Not only has he noticed changes in my personal and professional outlook, but so have other organizations in Nevada and in the United States. During my time at Nevada Boys State, a mock government summer program for high school juniors, I’ve taken my hour-long rambles into real policy proposals. By the end of the program, I was the delegate, out of 80+ others, with the most bills (4) passed and signed by our program’s governor. My work in Nevada Boys State, as well as in real government policy work, youth advocacy, and school tutoring, has been recognized by the Nevada Department of Education and as such, I was recognized this year as a finalist for the United States Senate Youth Program, one of the nation’s most prestigious leadership programs designed for high-achieving high school students pursuing public service and my most crowning achievement to-date. Despite not being selected as one of Nevada’s delegates, and the loss being one of the hardest I’ve had to-date, Mr. Patterson’s remarks, as he’s always done, reminded me that this achievement alone sets a precedent for what’s to come in my future. This achievement provides a status that separates me from most students, and Mr. Patterson has always reminded me that I am of that high-honor status because of the amount of time and effort I’ve put into everything. There’s no denying that Mr. Patterson is truly a life-changing teacher. Mr. Patterson is the teacher that’ll stay an extra 30 minutes just to have a heart-to-heart conversation before a long school break. Mr. Patterson is the teacher that’ll connect with other teachers from different schools just to open up a paid-job opportunity for you, or even a campaign internship. Mr. Patterson is the teacher that’ll immediately recognize that in the midst of academic chaos and high-pressure environments, playing a board game or two won’t hurt to ease the stress levels for his students. Mr. Patterson is the teacher that’ll celebrate your biggest wins with you, but also help comfort you during your lowest lows, or even when you are having a bad day. You can define Mr. Patterson as a teacher by the book, but to me, Mr. Patterson is more than just that: Mr. Patterson is a role model, a father figure, an individual who has gone above and beyond over the last 30 years of his teaching career. From being a quiet, reserved student who had small interests in computer science and finance to now being a resilient, compassionate, and community-driven leader who looks forward to shaping future K-12 education policy across the nation at Duke University, it has been the highest honor and privilege to have been on this journey together alongside a teacher like Mr. Patterson.
