Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
MARCUS JOHNSON
WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
I still remember one year ago when I first joined JROTC I was a bad kid going down a bad path, I use to act up in class and not care about school at all. I hated ROTC I thought the class was stupid and even went to the counselor to try to switch my class out because I didn't wanna do this class because how corny it was. She told me it was either this or virtual PE which I thought was worse so I decided to stay. During the first quarter of school I miraculously gotten straight A on all my classes. Coach saw this and despite us hating each other due to how I be acting he saw I had potential to become a leader because he saw me doing the right things and getting my work done outside of ROTC. Due to this he put me as commander for my flight in ROTC where then I began to realize how much potential I have and began taking everything seriously. My life changed around. I started getting A in all of my classes because he made me realize that I have to work hard so I can go on and help my family out of struggle. I began retaking classes I previously done bad on all to make my transcript look good and in the end I ended up becoming 1st out of 500 students. Whenever I feel like giving up coach is always there motivating all of us to keep trying and to work hard. Even in sports when I did cross country he was always there by our side helping us and pushing us further so we can become something great in life. Right now I wouldn't be where I am at if it wasn't for him and I thank him alot for everything he done for me and forever changing my life.
