Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
LINDA JULIEN
NORTHGATE CROSSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Ms. Julien has taught my youngest son on three different occasions and taught my oldest son last year. It is safe to say our family has become very familiar with her and her teaching style.
From both of my sons’ perspectives, Ms. Julien is a strict teacher. She expects accountability and does not settle for less. In today’s school environment, that level of consistency is rare. Many educators become understandably fatigued managing large groups of students, and expectations can soften over time. Ms. Julien is different. She clearly believes in what she does and follows through on her expectations, which is why she has made such a lasting impact.
Every interaction I have had with Ms. Julien as a parent has been respectful, thoughtful, and professional. She has always been polite, intelligent, and grounded in her approach. While I’m certain my boys were not perfect students, she never framed conversations around misbehavior. Instead, it was clear she understands the nature of children (especially boys) and knows how to allow them to be themselves while still drawing firm, appropriate boundaries. She has an exceptional ability to correct behavior without escalating situations, which speaks to both her experience and emotional intelligence.
One moment in particular stands out to our family. Ms. Julien once attended my oldest son’s basketball game in a church league on a Saturday, simply to support him. She had told him she would come, and she followed through. We were genuinely surprised to see her there. My son is not a star basketball player, and he sat on the bench the entire game, yet she showed up anyway. That single act made a powerful statement about her character and her commitment to her students.
Ms. Julien understands something fundamental about teaching: to earn respect from students, you must first show them respect. She does not demand authority, she earns it through action and consistency. Once my children decide they respect a teacher, they willingly follow instruction, and Ms. Julien achieved that respect by honoring her own commitments.
Unfortunately, Ms. Julien was only my younger son’s teacher for the first few months of this year due to a staffing change that reassigned her to teach younger students. While we were saddened by the change, we are grateful that she remains at Northgate, sharing her dedication, discipline, and care with many other students who will benefit from having her in their lives.
Ms. Julien is the kind of teacher who shapes character, not just classrooms, and she is truly deserving of recognition.
