Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
LEMICHELE GERRELLS
MAGILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY

Upon arrival as a transfer student into second grade, my daughter was behind, as far as curriculum was concerned, from county to county and she lost a lot of foundational concepts because shortly after starting kindergarten through 1st grade, Covid happened...hence virtual schooling. That first year at Magill she went through 3 teachers. By the time Mrs. Gerrells got her in 3rd grade, her patience, her passion, her love, and dedication to her students specifically mine really shown. She saw her previous grades and called me and said "mom, we will get her through this, she will be okay!" Mrs. Gerrells managed to get her test scores from below grade level in all areas to approaching grade level in some areas. She never gave up on her. Her goal was to bridge the gap if nothing else. She did random check-ins with phone calls or chat messages, sent examples home for me to learn the "new math" to help, she gave plenty of suggestions on how to assist in extra teaching methods and assignments I could use to keep the learning materials fresh during the summer. The communication never stopped. It truly made a difference. My daughter is doing great in 5th grade. She's still progressing beautifully. Thank you Mrs. Gerrells, it began with you!!
