Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
LATOIYA SMITH
REDLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY

I would like to formally nominate Mrs. Smith, the CSI teacher at Redland, for recognition. Mrs. Smith’s genuine and transparent interest in the students she serves is truly admirable. She consistently demonstrates patience, fairness, and compassion toward every child, regardless of their circumstances. It is especially meaningful to acknowledge this considering that she works in CSI, where students often face significant behavioral and emotional challenges. Despite the demands of that environment, she treats each child with dignity and respect, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and valued. I am speaking from the perspective of a parent of a troubled 13-year-old who has, unfortunately, heard multiple educators express that they were “done” with my son. Hearing that as a parent is both disheartening and painful. In contrast, Mrs. Smith has never taken that stance. She does not give up. Instead, she continues to show up with consistency, accountability, and care. She holds students responsible while still making it clear that they matter. Mrs. Smith embodies the true spirit of education. She embraces challenges rather than avoiding them and remains steadfast in her belief that no child is beyond support or redemption, regardless of behavior or past mistakes. Her dedication stands out in a setting where perseverance and compassion are most needed. I commend Mrs. Smith for standing firm where few are willing to stand and for being the kind of educator who makes a lasting difference in the lives of the students she serves.
