Coming to Foothill this year from a different part of the city was a significant transition, especially since I did not know anyone in the area. When I learned that Coach Carey was establishing the first-ever Freshman Dance team, I was eager to join. Her policy was incredibly inclusive; she did not require tryouts and instead welcomed anyone willing to commit to hard work. This opportunity was exactly what I needed to build new friendships and establish a genuine connection to the Foothill community. Under her leadership, we performed at freshman football games, providing spirit and support during games that typically see low student attendance. We also participated in the Homecoming Parade and performed during basketball games. Throughout the season, Coach Carey has greatly impacted the entire team by instilling discipline and introducing us to new technical skills that have improved both our dancing and our mental fortitude. She frequently reminds us that dance is as mentally demanding as it is physically challenging, yet she fosters a positive environment that helps us overcome those obstacles. The program's impact extends well beyond our specific team. Tonight, Coach Carey organized a large-scale dance production involving all the OneHill schools. It was wonderful to see the "Future Falcons" perform on stage after being mentored by the Varsity and JV dancers. Furthermore, Coach Carey welcomed a student with special needs onto our freshman team; she has become a valued member of our group, and we have all worked to ensure she feels fully included. Because of Coach Carey’s vision, many students now feel a deep sense of belonging at Foothill. The program’s success is evident in its achievements: the Varsity team secured back-to-back National Hip-Hop Championships in Orlando just a year ago, and the JV team won a State title this year. I am personally excited to continue my journey by joining the JV team next year. Coach Carey strives to instill a level of dedication and focus in her dancers that ensures we always perform at our best. She demonstrates her care for us not only by developing our athletic skills but also by encouraging us to be kind, positive members of the campus community. Coach Carey has been a cornerstone of Foothill since before I was born, and she is a primary reason I chose to attend this school. She is truly deserving of this award.
