Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
KELLY SPAHR
ROBERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
“Eureka!” moments don’t happen by accident. They are guided, encouraged, and inspired, often by science teachers who deserve recognition for shaping the minds behind tomorrow’s discoveries. This goes to every science teacher, especially the BEST science teacher ever: Mr. Spahr.
Mr. Spahr is like gravity in space, drawing students in and keeping their attention in orbit. The way he creates a fun and engaging learning environment helps me and other students feel welcome and understood. This helps us do better in science and life because if we are engaged in the content of a topic, we can learn more since we now look forward to learning it. He also makes our work challenging and informative, while also being fun and engaging. Most of the time, when we had to do research projects, he had us write or type information about the topic, but he also allowed a full creative flow of our work to design it however we wanted, as long as we kept the original information intact. He also likes to tell different stories and details about himself whenever it is related to what we are learning that day, just so that we can understand it better.
His teaching style is also very fun and engaging. Most days, when we learn about something, he would have us turn and talk to a partner, which really helps us stay focused and remember the information. And whenever we have to answer questions, he would give us 1 minute or so to do it, which also helps to support our understanding of the topic. Next, he also doesn’t just teach us a lesson for a long part of the class, but he breaks the lesson down into parts so it is easier for us. Even the lab or hands-on practice is engaging. For example, if we were learning about inertia, there would be a station where you could sit in a rolling chair and have your partner push you. This was a very fun experience that helped us bond with each other and learn more. Do Nows and Exit Tickets are a very important part of learning, and the way he utilizes them is by explaining that they are like a rating of your understanding. This, of courses helps us be reassured for upcoming tests, either in science or other subjects, since it is like a mini quiz of what you learned.
Building a connection with the students is another thing. He knows all of us by name and knows many things about us by observing and talking to us. This helps the learning process because it helps him learn about each person’s learning process and gives that support to the students who need it. He also builds a connection with us by showing his goofy personality. His humor really helps us feel more comfortable with him and his class because it is like seeing another version of yourself, but older, so it really helps us think of him as just a fellow classmate who teaches us about science. He doesn’t just do it in class; he builds connections with students outside of the classroom. Whenever students walk by, including me, he helps remind us to go to class, and he says many positive things to us if we talk to him in the hallway. This makes me and many other students feel better if they weren’t feeling their best before.
Mr. Spahr is definitely one of the very best teachers to exist since he is friendly, engaging, funny, unpredictable, and welcoming. His teaching style is very comfortable, adjustable, and, of course, engaging, so that we can understand and remember the information better. His personality is so amazing and optimistic that even if I am feeling bad that day, I will always look forward to his class. He is truly deserving of the spotlight and good things coming to him. Thank you for allowing me to honor my teacher and nominate him to be a part of the spotlight!
