KAYLA MICKENS
LINK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Abel is a nonverbal autistic 3-year-old who experiences the world in his own beautiful way. As his mom, sending him to school for the first time was both emotional and scary. But from the very beginning, Ms. Mickens and Ms. Pickett have made this journey one filled with hope, growth, and joy.
What makes Ms. Mickens such an awesome teacher is her patience, compassion, and genuine love for her students. She understands that every child develops differently, and she meets Abel exactly where he is. She never rushes him. Instead, she gently encourages him. Her calm presence, constant smile, and positive energy create a classroom environment that feels safe and welcoming.
Ms. Mickens makes going to class exciting by celebrating small victories and turning learning into fun experiences. Through hands-on activities, coloring, counting games, and practicing the alphabet, she has helped Abel discover new interests. He has learned to love coloring, enjoys counting, and is beginning to say the alphabet. Learning isn’t pressured—it’s joyful.
One of the most meaningful changes we’ve seen is in Abel’s confidence. When he first started school, he was very anxious and stayed in his shell. Now, he is becoming more sociable and less fearful about going to class. He is starting to come out of his shell in ways that fill my heart with gratitude. Ms. Mickens and Ms. Pickett consistently encourage positivity and growth, helping him feel capable and included.
They show they care in so many ways. Their communication with me has been excellent—they keep me informed, share updates, and celebrate his progress. That reassurance has meant everything. Abel even received thoughtful Christmas gifts from Ms. Mickens, which showed how much she truly cares about her students beyond the classroom walls.
Inside the classroom, they foster patience, understanding, and acceptance. Outside the classroom, they provide support through communication, encouragement, and partnership. Because of them, I feel confident and safe knowing Abel is in loving and capable hands.
In such a short period of time this school year, Ms. Mickens has helped Abel achieve milestones that once felt so far away. I am truly blessed and deeply grateful that Abel’s first school experience has been with Ms. Mickens and Ms. Pickett. We are so thankful and incredibly proud of how far he has come.
They have made a lasting impact on Abel’s life…and on mine as his mother. Thank you for everything, truly.
