I would like to submit Mr. Coicou for the Life-Changing Teacher Award because he truly changed my daughter Arielle’s life. Since Arielle was very little, she has always had a beautiful voice. She sang everywhere she went, all day long—until she started school. Almost immediately, she was bullied. Children made fun of her for singing, for how she looked, what she wore—everything about her. As a result, Arielle completely stopped singing. No matter what we did, she absolutely refused to sing again. We moved her through several schools in hopes of avoiding the bullying. Then, unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and we decided to homeschool Arielle while I went through treatment. This past October, Arielle started at Congress Middle School, and I cannot say enough about how kind and welcoming the entire staff has been. For the first time, she didn’t dread going to school. During her very first week, Mr. Coicou visited Arielle’s dance class to help the students warm up for an upcoming performance. As the class sang together, he immediately noticed Arielle’s voice. When he heard her singing in the crowd, he stopped, called her out, and asked her to sing on her own in front of the class. His reaction to her voice—his encouragement, enthusiasm, and genuine belief in her—sparked something we hadn’t seen in years: confidence. That day, Arielle ran to the car beaming with happiness, excitedly telling me everything that had happened. Mr. Coicou invited her to join his after-school chorus club, and from that moment on, Arielle began singing again. We are beyond grateful to Mr. Coicou for recognizing Arielle’s talent, supporting her, believing in her, and giving her a safe place to shine and rediscover her voice. Because of him, Arielle has found her place among her peers. She now has friends, a passion, and truly enjoys going to school every day. Thank you, Mr. Coicou, for the lasting impact you have made on our daughter’s life. If anyone deserves the Life-Changing Teacher Award, it is absolutely you.
