Mr. Rivera coaches a competitive robotics team that requires good writing to achieve their success. He took a big risk welcoming Arlo onto the team because Arlo has extreme difficulty writing. Because Arlo loved robotics so much and loved being on a successful team, he has worked hard all year to develop his writing skills so that he could help his team create a great engineering notebook. After competitions he would spend his weekend time writing up entries about their successes and failures. His writing has improved tremendously because he has found something he wants to write about. It is hard to function at school when one of the main activities of a student (writing) causes your brain to inundate you with intrusive thoughts and your body to tic out of control at the anxiety those thoughts produce. Being on the robotics team has not only motivated Arlo to write willingly, but it is also frequently the only reason he agrees to go to school at all in the morning. I’m grateful to Mr. Rivera for helping me to get Arlo to school every day and helping him find a passion.
