Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
GAYLORD TREJO
DEKANEY HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
When I first met Mr. Trejo, I didn’t realize how much of an impact he would end up having on my life. I currently attend Wunsche High School, which is an academy that focuses on academics and career paths, but doesn’t offer sports or fine arts electives. While that environment has its benefits, something always felt like it was missing for me. But, then I found out I could transfer to my home campus, Dekaney highschool for sports or art electives during first or eighth period.
This information led to my decision three years ago to transfer to Dekaney High School for my first period so I could take a theatre class, as I was curious and really hoped I would like it. Now, three years in and counting as a member of the Dekaney Theatre Company, I can confidently say I continue to go back every year because Mr. Trejo helped me discover my love for theatre and acting. Through his class, I found a passion for telling stories, connecting with an audience, and bringing awareness to social issues and my own beliefs.
Mr. Trejo is the kind of teacher who welcomes everyone. His classroom is open to anyone, no matter their background or experience, and you can immediately feel that it’s a safe space. He genuinely loves what he does, and he reminds us of that every day. It shows in the way he teaches, the energy he brings, and the effort he puts into making sure every student feels included and valued.
What makes his class so special is that it’s not just about theatre. Yes, we learn about performing arts, but we also learn real life skills like time management, responsibility, and confidence. As my theatre director for UIL One Act Play, he has pushed me to grow not only as an actor but also as a student and as a person. He constantly encourages me to keep striving for my goals and reminds me that hard work pays off.
He also goes above and beyond to show how much he cares. If any student needs help, even outside of theatre, he will take the time to research and find ways to support them because he truly believes no student should be left behind. One thing I admire the most is how he advocates for special needs students to be part of his class, because he believes they are just as capable as anyone else. That kind of mindset creates a diverse and healthy environment where everyone has a place.
Mr. Trejo takes pride in his students. He tells us how proud he is of us every chance he gets, and it feels genuine. Our wins are his wins, and our losses are his losses. He’s understanding and supportive, and for many students, including myself, he is someone we can rely on. He makes sure everyone feels seen and heard, which is something that really matters.
Choosing to come back to Dekaney, even while attending another school, wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one. The theatre program Mr. Trejo has built is more than just a class, it’s a community. It’s diverse, supportive, and full of opportunities to grow.
Because of him, I’ve become more confident, more responsible, and more motivated both inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Trejo isn’t just a great theatre teacher, he’s a role model and someone who truly cares about his students and their future.
