Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
ELLIOTT LENTZ
NORTH CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Ever since 8th grade I was always excited to go to North Central Highschool and join the orchestra department, hoping to joing Symphony Orchestra. WIth the few months I had until auditions I went to the summer orchestra camp where I first meet Mr.Lentz. I will admit I was very nervous having a new music teacher, but that feeling quickly went away when I saw how kind Mr.Lentz was. Because of him I learned how to play in higher positions, to appreciate music more, understand that music cannot be played perfectly overnight, and more importantly; practice makes perfect. In my first official year in North Central I joined Festival Orchestra. In Festival I got a grasp on the expectations Mr. Lentz has for his students and understood why North Central Orchestras are full of very talented and smart individuals. The music for Festival was always fun and challenging pushing me to practice everyday after school and begin to grow as a musician. However, my second year in highschool, I moved to Symphony and the level in music was drastic and almost scary. The music was in positions I've never played and keys that looked impossible, but nonetheless the words of encouragement from Mr. Lentz would always help. Symphony Orchestrta is a professional feeling orchestra, always pushing to be the best, no matter the level of music. I always remember being frustrated with parts that seemed to get worse with more practice rather than better, but hearing Mr. Lentz say "If music was easy, everyone would do it" always reminds me that I've dedicated years to playing and I shouldn't give up now. Inside the classroom I feel as if Mr.lentz tries to uplift all of us at once, because once we are all feeling motivated we naturally come together and let the music piece together. However, outside of the classroom I feel that Mr.Lentz makes an effort to talk to the musicians within his ensembles, which to me shows a great example of a teacher wanting to know their students and allow them to feel safe and comfortable in their presence.
