Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
ANGEL SCHMIEDT
MIAMI JACKSON SENIOR HIGH
STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY
Since high school started, I had a hard time fitting in and feeling comfortable in my skin. However, when I entered the class of Ms.Smchiedt, it felt like my worries faded and instead I was engulfed in learning. Knowledge was bestowed upon me and it grew day by day. For ninth grade, her class was the one that made me get up and not give up. I passed ninth grade with amazing grades, and it would have not been possible without her encouragement and kindness towards all her students. Many would in the beginning criticize her for teaching too much, but as I got to know her I realized that she just wanted us to actually learn and have fun at the same time, not just stay in a class stuck doing assignments for hours. Her speeches allowed me to understand what I was learning thoroughly. As 9th grade ended, 10 grade began. This school year, I had her for a Dual Enrollment program with Georgetown University. I was hesitant at first but then I remembered the last school year and how she helped us learn through it and prepare ourselves for college, and I knew I was ready to take on a challenge. Then, as that DE ended, I got a job. I had to, I felt as though I wanted to start saving up and helping my mom out so I didn’t have to ask her for any money for college. I wanted to start early. But as I started working, I started not caring about school. I was very exhausted and i wasn’t eating properly either. I was and am still struggling to maintain a routine. Ms.Smchiedt, however, when I told her about the situation and the way I felt, she just hugged me and told me everything was gonna be alright. That night I cried, because I knew everything was gonna be alright as long as I tried my best, as she said. She stayed up after I got back home from work to check on my work and help me as much as possible. She cut time to sleep, to help me, a student, and I can confidently say that she would do it for everyone that asked that of her. She cares so much to helping us succeed that she is willing to lose sleep for us. Ms.Smchiedt is a one in a lifetime kind of teacher, à educator truly devoted to her profession.
