Mrs Burk helped instill a love of reading by coaching and teaching children participating in Battle of the Books. I was surprised that Cal wanted to participate voluntarily but I soon noticed his excitement to go to early morning meetings to study, saw him reading without being told, and heard details of each meeting for Battle of the Books. It’s hard to sum up Battle of the Books into those 4 words because Mrs Burk put in a LOT of extra time to help these students. From preparation, to encouragement for the team who lost, she was there ready and always smiling. Aside from that, Mrs Burk knows the students by name, knows their interests, engages meaningful conversations with them, and I can’t thank her enough for being a part of our circle. We all love and admire her. We are LUCKY to have her at Lummis.
