Congratulations to
Life-Changing Teaching Award Nominee
ALEXANDER GUMP
WESTLANE MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENT RECOGNITION STORY

I don't go to Westlane anymore, I'm now a freshman in high school, but I still want to honor Mr Gump because of the lasting effect he's had on me. When I first entered his class, I didn't know anybody. I was quiet and kept to myself. But Mr Gump made me feel welcome and seen from the very beginning. Because of him, I didn't feel so alone. Not only did he make the class interesting, he cared about his students. He took the time to make sure everyone felt included and important. Even in 8th grade I would visit his room because it felt like a safe space. I knew I could talk to him about anything, whether it was school related or personal. He would never judge me on anything and always gave me thoughtful advice that I still think about today. Having a teacher who truly listens and cares can change a student's confidence, and he did that for me. Now that I'm in high school it's harder to visit my favorite teacher, but I hope that someday I will see him again. Teachers like Mr Gump leave a lasting mark, and I will always be grateful for the support and kindness he showed me.
